Researchers from UCSB recently concluded that the presence of academic advisors is critical in the success of college students. The team published a paper titled, “Advisor Value-Added and Student Outcomes: Evidence from Randomly Assigned College Advisors,” which details how a high-value academic advisor improves freshman year GPA, graduation rates, and other markers of academic success in college.

The research team was led by Serena Canaan (a UCSB alumnus) and current PhD students Antoine Deeb and Pierre Mouganie. Their research was showcased in a blog post Professor Dick Startz published on the Brookings website.
