Biography

I am an Assistant Professor at the University of California, Irvine. I hold a PhD from the Toulouse School of Economics. My research interests include Economic Geography, Macroeconomics and Labor Economics.

Title

 "Home Bias and the Gender Wage Gap"

Abstract

This paper studies how gender differences in birthplace attachment, interacting with firm labor market power, contribute to the gender wage gap. We document that women—particularly mothers and married women—are more likely than men to return to their birthplace. Using cross-market variation in the share of local-born workers, we show that wages and earnings are higher in markets experiencing more immigration. We develop a model with gender-specific location preferences and firm labor market power to rationalize these patterns. Stronger attachment reduces women’s outside options, increasing their exposure to monopsony. Preliminary counterfactuals indicate that eliminating firm market power and equalizing the elasticities of substitution reduces the earnings gap by more than 80%.
