The Philip Babcock Memorial Lecture was established at the University of California, Santa Barbara to honor the vibrant legacy of UCSB Professor Philip Babcock. The lecture seeks to expose our students and the community at large to the most intriguing applications of economics. Speakers have been chosen to convey some of the joy Professor Babcock found in applying economics to the world.

Hanming Fang is Joseph M. Cohen Term Professor of Economics at the University of Pennsylvania. He also holds a secondary appointment at the Department of Health Care Management and the Department of Business Economics and Public Policy at the Wharton School. He is an applied microeconomist with broad theoretical and empirical interests focusing on public economics, including topics such as discrimination, social insurance, and welfare reform, health insurance markets, and population aging.

Fang will be giving his presentation, "Resurgence of the SOEs in China" at the Flying A Studios in the University Center on October 24, 2023 at 3:30 pm. It is a combination of some general thoughts on the resurgence of the SOEs after 2012 in the Chinese economy and then delve deeper into a specific channel based on his research paper Understanding the Resurgence of the SOEs in China: Evidence from the Real Estate Sector.
