Professor Kolstad specializes in environmental and resource economics. Within that speciality, he works on environmental regulation, valuing environmental goods and services, and understanding the operation of energy markets. He currently has a large research project on the economics of climate change, emphasizing the role of uncertainty and learning. He is also involved in a project with Professor Deacon on valuing environmental resources where there is substitution across time and space. In the past, Professor Kolstad has conducted research on the demand for energy, imperfect competition in resource markets, including the international coal market, spatial differentiation of environmental regulations, and the design of air pollution regulations.
