Guidelines for missing class or tests

Class attendance:

Upon the assumption that class (and section) attendance is a responsibility shared by adults, students are expected to attend every class (and section) meeting. It is an expectation that you will attend every class (and section); however, attendance is voluntary and not required. If you are going to miss a class, there is no need to email or let me (or the ta) know since you will not be dropped from the class nor will missing classes (and sections) be calculated into your grade.

Testing material is taken from the textbook and from lectures. Therefore, if you miss lecture(s), there is a possibility that material absent from the textbook will be presented. The burden of obtaining this information is yours. You should get notes from a fellow student. It is your responsibility to ensure you understand the notes. If you need clarification regarding borrowed notes, see me (or your ta) during office hours (please bring the notes with you). Students are responsible for all material covered in classes they miss, even when their absences are excused.

Quizzes:

If you miss a quiz(zes), there are no make-up quizzes. You do not need to provide proof as to why you missed. Your final will be weighted at a higher percent and the missed quiz(zes) dropped. For the exact re-weighting of the final, see the course syllabus. I strongly suggest you take the quiz(zes) since the final tends to be more difficult because it is comprehensive.

Midterm(s):

If you miss the midterm(s), there are no make-up exams. You are responsible for providing written documentation including, but not limited to, doctor’s notice, funeral programs, etc. Your final will be weighted at a higher percent and the missed midterm(s) dropped. For the exact re-weighting of the final, see the course syllabus. I strongly suggest you take the midterm(s) since the final tends to be more difficult because it is comprehensive.

Final:

If you miss the final, there are no make-up exams. Students who miss the final will receive a score of zero and will likely fail the class. If you know in advance that you will miss the final, you should drop the class immediately and retake the class at a later time. If it is too late to drop the class, you should consider filing an incomplete or filing a retroactive withdrawal. For university policies and procedures see http://my.sa.ucsb.edu/catalog/Current/AcademicPoliciesProcedures/AbsenceWithdrawal.aspx

The only exception to missing midterm(s)/final is for student athletes/representatives who need to attend a University sponsored sporting/academic event. If this applies to you, provide documentation and the name of your test proctor. Your proctor must be affiliated with the University and cannot be a student. You will be expected to take the midterm(s)/final at the same time the midterm(s)/final is scheduled at UCSB unless your event occurs during that time. If that is the case, then you are expected to take the midterm(s)/final either immediately before or after the event. It is the responsibility of your proctor to return your midterm(s)/final to me asap. Lost or missing midterm(s)/final will receive a score of zero. I suggest having your proctor take a picture of each test page then emailing it to me in the event the test is misplaced.
