Graduate Student Funding Proposals

The Department of Economics is accepting research, data purchase, experiment, and travel funding proposals from Ph.D. students in Economics for; Fall 2019, Winter 2020, Spring 2020 quarters, AND Summer 2020, for Academic Year 2019-2020.

Travel and experiments for submitted proposals must be (are required) to ​take place between the below listed dates (NO EXCEPTIONS);

  • Fall 2019: September 1, 2019 through December 31, 2020
  • Winter 2020: January 1, 2020 through March 30, 2020
  • Spring 2020:  April 1, 2020 through July 31st, 2020
  • Summer 2020: July 1, 2020 through August 31, 2020

**It is important to note, that you might need to spend the money and pay your credit card bill, before you receive the funding and/or before the funding request is approved (or in some cases denied).

Students cannot apply for funds for travel, data purchases or experiments that will take place in the ​Fall 2020 academic quarter or any future quarter. Funding proposals will be accepted at a future deadline.

In addition, due to the California state law AB 1887 "Travel Prohibition to Certain States Using State Funding Source​", we cannot fund travel to and from the following states currently subject to California’s ban on state-funded and state-sponsored travel:

  1. Alabama
  2. Iowa - Effective October 4, 2019​
  3. Kansas
  4. Kentucky
  5. Mississippi
  6. North Carolina
  7. Oklahoma
  8. South Carolina
  9. South Dakota
  10. Tennessee
  11. Texas

All Economics Ph.D. students in residence at UCSB, in good academic standing, and who are meeting time to degree requirements, are eligible to apply. Travel, data purchases, and experiments for submitted proposals must take place during September 1, ​2019 through August 31, 2020 (the period of the funding it was applied for). No exceptions!

Proposals will be evaluated and approved or denied, by the Faculty Director of Graduate Studies, Dr. Richard Startz.

In addition, those students applying for money for an experiment are required to have the written approval (sent as part of the funding proposal documentation) of the faculty member who runs the experimental reading group, Dr. Ryan Oprea, as well as a written letter of recommendation from their dissertation chair/advisor.

The new revised "Policy on Department Support for Graduate Student Travel" can be downloaded by clicking HERE. It is very important that you read and understand the policy. In submitting a funding proposal, you are by default acknowledging and agreeing to the terms and conditions of the travel policy.

Please also make sure to follow all the requirements for travel funding requests. Remember that receipts are 100% required (mandatory) to be turned in for travel funding requests. Stipends will not be given for travel funding, but you will be reimbursed up to the amount allowed by the travel policy and that which has been approved by the Director of Graduate Studies.

Please also note that the new requirements for funding and in connection with deadlines to process paperwork for funding requests, funds may not be available to you until after you need to make a payment to a credit card you charged.

Copy Editing Resources

Editing Resource List now available

Do you need someone to help edit your writing? The Graduate Student Resource Center recently published a list of editors for hire as a third party to connect students with potential editors for various writing projects. Many of these individuals have extensive experience editing dissertations, grant applications and reports, business communications, manuscripts, and other types of essays.

The Graduate Division does not officially endorse the quality or services of anyone on this list, nor do we receive compensation of any kind for business that transpires through this list. The only two vetting criteria used to determine editor qualification are that 1) the person demonstrates sufficient professional editing abilities and 2) is directly associated with the university (either as a faculty person or as a current/former student).

New Presentation Practice Room in the Library

The UCSB Library has available by reservation for UCSB students, faculty and staff, a new Presentation Practice Room. Located on the 1st Floor Mountain Side (room 1506), the space allows you to practice, refine, and record oral and multimedia presentations for classes and seminars, conferences, teaching preparation, the Grad and Undergrad Slam, thesis defenses, and other events.

You can reserve the Practice Presentation Room online 2 weeks in advance and for 2-hour periods per day through our reservation system.

The room includes:

A podium
A large wall display monitor that connects to your personal laptop or to a Library laptop
A ceiling-mounted camera
A whiteboard and markers
A table and 6 chairs

Instructions for using the technology, including how to record presentations, are posted in the room. Clickers with laser pointers are available for check-out from the Library Services Desk.
