Quasi-Experimental Research in Health Economics Conferenceposted Feb 07, 2007
On Saturday March 17 2007 the Economics Department will be sponsoring a conference on Quasi-experimental Research in Health Economics. Quasi-experimental methods have becoming increasingly used in Health Economics, and this conference will highlight the resulting recent research. Young scholars from around the country and from UCSB will participate in the conference. The presentations will cover a wide range of topics, including among others the health impacts of Head Start, the effect of laws restricting access to alcohol on health, and the impact of education on mortality.

On March 3, the Department of Economics is sponsoring a symposium in honor of Mortimer Andron and the generous support that he has provided to our graduate students throughout the years. Takings & Eminent Domain Conferenceposted May 03, 2006
On May 12 and 13 the Economics Department is sponsoring a conference on Takings - the public condemnation (eminent domain) of private property for public use. This conference is particularly relevant today in the wake of the recent, and controversial, Supreme Court decision on the right of the public agency in New London Connecticut to condemn private property for other private use. Experts from around the country will participate in the conference. Talks will cover a wide range of topics. Included among them are equity and efficiency of compensation rules, the problem of the hold out, the application of takings law to the NAFTA agreement and the potential abuse of takings privileges as witnessed in the designation of private property as wetlands. The condemnation of property for public use has implication for the environment, individual liberty, economic efficiency and community development - all of these topics will be covered during the two day conference.


Macroeconomics of Imperfect Risk Sharingposted Apr 24, 2006
On May 11-13, 2006, the Laboratory for Aggregate Economics and Finance will sponsor a conference entitled "The Macroeconomics of Imperfect Risk Sharing." The conference will bring together some of the best junior macroeconomics researchers doing both applied and theoretical work on economic models of imperfect insurance.

The Department of Economics and Professor Finn Kydland's Laboratory for Aggregate Economics and Finance are jointly sponsoring a conference on October 28-29, to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the publication of the seminal paper, "The Equity Premium: A Puzzle" by Edward Prescott and Rajnish Mehra. Since its publication this paper has had an enormous impact on both the practice of portfolio management and the research agenda in Finance.
