Massachusetts Budget and Policy Center (MBPC) is pleased to announce
the launch of our search for a new Research Director.

MBPC provides independent research and analysis of state budget and
tax policies as well as economic issues that affect low- and moderate- income people in Massachusetts. Active citizens, the media, grassroots
and issue organizations, and policy makers across Massachusetts rely
on our non-partisan reports to make informed contributions to critical
debates and to make their voices heard.

We seek a talented professional with experience in public policy
research and management to step into this newly created role.
Reporting to Executive Director Noah Berger, the Research Director
will work to define and balance a portfolio of research and management
responsibilities in accordance with MBPC’s mission. S/he will
supervise MBPC’s policy analysts and collaborate with all staff to
develop and produce clear, reliable information about tax, budget and
economic policy choices to the public. The Director will both serve as
the lead tax policy researcher for MBPC as well as manage the quality
and substance of information flow within the organization and to
external constituencies. S/he will oversee the research and writing of
MBPC’s in-depth reports including its signature publication, Budget
Monitor. The successful candidate must be able to transform complex
budget, tax and economic policy into clear and straightforward
language for engaged citizens, grassroots and issue advocates, the
press, policymakers, and other audiences. S/he will possess excellent
research and analytical skills, as well as demonstrated expertise
managing highly skilled teams. S/he will have the sophistication,
agility and knowledge to establish credibility as an authority on
state tax and budget concerns and will balance strong quantitative
skills with effective communication skills. S/he will embrace MBPC’s
commitment to use accurate, careful, and thorough research to inform
public debates and to provide more people with the information they
need to participate more effectively in those debates. S/he will
demonstrate the capacity to manage multiple projects simultaneously in
a collaborative and non-hierarchical work atmosphere. Ideally, s/he
will have an advanced degree in Public Policy, Economics or a related
field, though candidates with significant research and/or policy
management experience will also be considered. Qualified applicants
will have at least 5-10 years of relevant work experience in public
policy, government, or a related field.

Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond

The Research Department at the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond has an opening for a
research associate. Research associates help economists fulfill their responsibilities. Economists conduct fundamental research and advise the Bank’s President and other senior officers on the monetary and banking policies of the Federal Reserve System. A research associate’s role may range from collecting data and other source materials and writing computer code to active collaboration with economists.
It is anticipated that research associates will pursue graduate study in economics at a later
date. (Typically, they remain here for two years.) Research associates are encouraged to pursue their education while at the bank. Frequently, they have taken courses in mathematics at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond.
The Research Department maintains a staff of more than a dozen economists actively
engaged in research in macroeconomics and the microeconomics of banking. It also maintains a regular seminar series and active academic consultant and visiting scholar programs that bring in economists from major universities. (In the past, the contacts provided by these programs have been useful to research associates interested in applying to top graduate schools.) The academic environment of the Research Department is ideal for the student who would like to learn about current research in economics.
Candidates must have a strong background in economics, especially basic price theory. As part of the interview process, candidates may be quizzed on the basic concepts taught in price theory. A strong background in mathematics and computer programming (e.g. Fortran, Matlab, Gauss) is also desirable.
The starting salary for this position will be $45,000. Interested students should apply
online at http://www.richmondfed.org/about_us/our_jobs/employment_opportunities/index.cfm,
using Req. #1433.
